About Monash University Faculty of Medicine, Australia
The Faculty works mainly from the Clayton, Caulfield and Peninsula campuses of Monash University, all based in Melbourne Metropolitan. The majority of colleges, study centres and technology platforms at the Faculty are home to Monash Clayton. The campus of the Peninsula is situated near Frankston Hospital. Courses taught on this campus include nursing and midwifery, paramedic and emergency health, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy. The University pledged $20 million in 2016 to develop the campus to become Australia’s leading centre for education and research related to health and primary care.
Over 46,000 undergraduates and 13,000 postgraduate students live at Monash University. There are more than 100 study centres within the campus. The Monash Center for Synchrotron Science, the Accident Research Center, the Monash Institute of Medical Research and the Australian Regenerative Medical Institute are some remarkable study institutes situated on campus.
The five-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) curriculum is intended as an integrated course with four topics in which units are taught interdisciplinarily by faculty-wide employees and in a broad spectrum of teaching settings (campus and clinical). The fundamental medical and behavioural sciences (anatomy, biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and sociology) will be implemented in interdisciplinary units during the early years of the course.
The course has expanded semester durations and needs about 25 official contact hours per week in years one and two, although students are anticipated to spend about 40 hours per week working at a clinical site in years three to five. This gives students time for self-directed research, time and chance to be in command of their own learning, and development of problem-solving abilities and critical data assessment. These degrees are given at the level of honours. This award’s grading is based on academic achievement.
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is Monash’s biggest research faculty, with over $172 million in research earnings in 2015. The Faculty’s research has been released in the Nature Publishing Group, The Lancet, and The New England Medicine Journal.
